"What happens if they land here?" Christabel asked, watching the ship from over the top of a gentle rise in the sand. "They might maroon some rogue prisoners here, like I was, and we'll be trapped with them."

"We wouldn't have to deal with them for long," Paolo said pausing to roll up his sleeves. "Not after I'm done with them," he added lifting his head up to stare at the ship again.

Christabel failed to see how Paolo could take out a band of rogues alone with no weapons, but didn't say anything. When stranded she found it was best to keep a positive outlook. So there was nothing to do but sit in the sand, watching the faraway lights of the ship and listen to the drums and hope whoever was running it didn't get the bright idea to dump some of their inmates here, or else that would spell baaad news for the current strandees.

Unfortunately, as time passed, Paolo realized luck would not be with them tonight. And probably not for some time. The ship drew closer and closer until it finally reached the sandy shores. It was already dawn now and the first streaks of light light up the sky. The drums that had been pounding all night had finally stopped when the ship docked and all that could be heard was shouting. Paolo crouched to the ground watching the pirates jump off their ship dragging prisoners with them.

Christabel sat around on the ground waiting for dawn, listening to the incessant drumming. As the sun was beginning to tint the water like a peach that the drums stopped. After listening to the steady beat all night, it seemed oddly silent when they stopped, and that immediately caught her attention. She stood behind a palm for cover and watched as prisoners were dragged ashore on the other end of the island. They were out of luck; the island was less than a quarter mile long, more like two hundred feet. Christabel had never been so close to such a bunch of rogues and it was intimidating to think of the things they could do to her. Of course the first thing those prisoners would do when the slavers went away would be to roam around the island looking for food, and they would come upon Paolo and Christabel in a matter of minutes, if they hadn't been spotted already. Then suddenly she got an idea.
"I know where we can hide," she said in a loud whisper. "There's a hold hidden in the sand over here. They won't know it's here."
She went over to the place where the trapdoor was hidden under the sand and opened it, stepping down a few worn old steps to the bottom of the hole. The walls of the small chamber were lined with bottle shelves, but they were all empty. Christabel motioned for Paolo to follow her into the hole and bring the remainder of the coconuts.

Paolo grabbed a bottle, coconuts and then slinked over to the trap door. Once down there he dropped the coconuts and quietly shut the door. Voices started shouting up above while the trap door started shaking. No one was opening it, just standing on it. "What are you doing with us?" a random voice asked. "Shut up," replied a voice apparently in charge. "But..." "I said shut up!" *sound of cracking whip* "A'eight, all ya line up, yep, yep. There ya go. Now, Kreger, blind fold 'em." said a shaky voice. There was many minutes of silence. Whoever was standing on the trap door was shifting his weight constantly which made the trap door creak. Paolo feared someone might hear it and discover them but that didn't happen. Instead numerous gun shots went off. "A'eight, they dead. Pile 'em up and burn them!" shouted the shaky voice.
Paolo's eyes widened, "We'll be burned alive! We need to get out!" he whispered.

"We mustn't!" Christabel whispered, trying to keep it low so they wouldn't be discovered. "Just think what they'd do to us! If they burn them the fire should burn out before it touches the ground. Still, it could get hot in here. But how will we know when they leave?"

Paolo was listening to Christabel but his eyes remained on the trap door. Apparently they were piling the bodies right on the door and the strain was starting to become too much. "Well, they might find us anyway." Paolo said motioning to the door that was creaking. "What is that confounded noise, Kreger?" asked a man. "I have no idea, Otho." responded a voice much weaker than the first. "It's sir to you!" shouted the man who was apparently named Otho.
While Otho lectured Kreger the door continued to creak and could give away any second. Paolo wasn't sure whether revealing themselves to the pirates better or staying and waiting while to bodies burned up above. Paolo made a quick decision by running to the trap door and raising his arms to help it hold its heavy burden.
